Kannawidan Festival of Ilocos Sur

In the Province of Ilocos Sur, the Kannawidan celebration commemorates the division of the two

provinces in 1818. Ilocos Sur uses it as a means of showcasing its cultures, traditions, and

religious practices. It is the Ilocanos method of giving thanks to God for all of his blessings as

well as for the rich heritage of the region, which includes their strong familial bonds. This event

will feature a variety of thrilling activities and performances. The celebration gives Ilocano kids

more focus. Its because the provinces younger generations do not understand Ilocano culture. But current dances are covered more in depth.

It is customary for a mass to be celebrated at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral during the

festivals official opening. The patron saints of the 40 parishes and statues of Jesus Christ and the

Virgin Mary are then carried in procession around Vigan City. DepEd Officials of the province

usually join the mass and the procession. This occasion demonstrates the Ilocanos' fervent

religiosity. On the first day of the celebration, prior to the outbreak of the epidemic, the students

from Ilocos Sur also take part in a customary ceremony. Younger generations are inspired by the

Kannawidan Ylocos Festival to learn the traditional music and dances of Ilocos Sur.

uphold local customs and traditions.
